A poor credit report is due to: late payments, accounts that are into collection, and bankruptcies.  If you want to fix your credit score, you must change your habits.Changing your habitsover time will start to improve your credit score.Once you fix your credit score, you will be offered lower interest credit cards and you will get lower rates from lenders.

Check out the 4 tips below to help you repair your credit report:

1. All Bills Must Be Paid Promptly

Companies lend money based on your past credit history.  This allows them to determine how much of a risk you are to them.If you can show that you are someone who pays of their debts it’s quite likely that you will pay off your debts in the future. So, you will be less of a risk.

2. Carry the Right Amount of Credit Carts

Most people these days carry around far too many credit cards.  So, what is the right number you should have?  Many credit experts say you should have 2 – 4 credit cards at any one time.Don’t go rushing to your wallet and start cutting up your cards though because these companies not only consider how many cards you have but they look at what balance you maintain on them.  The best thing to do would be to pay them off and keep them until you have a reasonable balance on them all.  Then, you can decide which ones to keep.

3. You Must Make No Less Than the Minimum Payment

When your credit card statement arrives make sure you pay at least the minimum payment and if you can try to pay more. You Must Make No Less Than the Minimum Payment. When you pay less than the minimum you will assume late payments which will negatively affect your credit score.

4. Keep an Eye on Your Credit Report

You have to watch your credit report closely.Equifax, Experian and TransUnion are the 3 bureaus that keep track of your credit score.  Once you receive it make sure you check it carefully for any mistakes, negative information  or any accounts that you do not recognize.  Not only will this tell you what you need to fix on your credit report but it will also tell you if you have had your identity stolen.

It’s vital that you work on developing good habits. The faster you can do this the better.  This will help you maintain a good credit score which will save you money.  If you need to repair your credit score do so, immediately.  This will help you out immensely and allow you to save money.

The first step in fixing a credit report is to read it. You can get a free credit report online (just look up “free credit report”). You can get a free copy of your report once a year, as well as when you are denied for credit – you can request a free copy of your credit report from the credit agency which supplied the report to the prospective creditor who turned you down.

Reading your credit report should answer the question of why you were turned down. However, how can you set things right again? Is there items on the report which are inaccurate, or ones which are correct but that you feel to be unfair?

You can dispute any item on your credit report by writing to the credit agency. You have to tell them that a given item is incorrect and by law they must investigate the matter within 30 days. Send your request by certified mail along with copies of canceled checks or any other documents which support your dispute.

The credit bureau will contact the organization which reported the item in dispute. If your do not receive a responce with proof within 14 days the credit agency must remove the item from your credit report. You can request that they send this updated report to any creditors who have seen your previous report in the last six months. Remember though, you have to ask for this since the agency will not do this otherwise.

A lot of creditors won’t bother to write back to the credit agency if the item in dispute is less than $500 or is over a year old. Fixing a credit report can be done, even if the items contained are accurate. Even if you can’t have an item removed the first time you try, you are allowed to dispute it again after 30 days have passed.

If it is impossible to remove an item that you have disputed, you are permitted to add a brief explanation, which will be visible to anyone who pulls your credit report. This explanation can be up to 100 words in length.

If there is a long history of late payments and defaults, fixing a credit report can be a long term project. However, you can correct some of the problems and provide an explanation for others. This kind of effort will go along way in helping to repair your credit report.
